The Doctoral Symposium is a new event in the frame of the MOSIM 2018 conference. It will take place prior to the main conference on Tuesday June 26, 2018. The symposium focuses on doctoral students seeking careers as researchers in public, private and academic organizations with research interests line with MOSIM 2018 topics.
The goals of the MOSIM 2018 Doctoral Symposium are three-fold:
- To develop and sustain a network of young scholars conducting high quality research in the area of Modelling, Optimization and Simulation.
- To support the next generation of researchers by addressing issues relevant to the progression of a research career. For this first edition, we are particularly focusing on communication skills (both verbal and written), with the help of a professional consultant in communication.
- To allow participants to discuss their research with leading specialists, scholars and peers in an international setting.
Up to ten students will be accepted for the symposium. Numbers are kept purposely small in order to offer high quality interaction and discussion.
The morning session will focus on introductions, networking and general mentoring,
providing students the opportunity to learn about one another’s research and to
improve their verbal communication skills. The afternoon session will consist of
collaborative and individual work sessions dedicated to improve their written
communication skills. The two sessions will also lead them to the creation of their poster
that will then be presented during the conference-wide poster session. A professional
consultant will assist the students throughout the symposium.
The aim of the symposium is to assist candidates with their PhD thesis (or Master thesis) research. Only master students and doctoral students who have not yet defended their thesis are eligible to apply (with priority given to doctoral students).
The participation in the MOSIM 2018 Doctoral Symposium is free, as well as lunch and refreshments. However, participants in the Doctoral Symposium must register for the MOSIM 2018 conference (a student rate is available).
How to apply
To apply, candidates should submit a single file by March 24th, 2018 to the Doctoral Symposium chairs, via email firstname.lastname@example.org
The file should include the following:
A short CV, no more than two pages, as a PDF file.
A video file, no more than 3 minutes. Inspired by the “My Thesis in 180 seconds” and “Three Minute Thesis” events (see examples on YouTube), the video will describe the research project: its context, aims and research question(s), the methodology, any results obtained to date and aspects of the research in which the student is seeking assistance. There is no need to record it in a very high definition (a webcam can be used to record the presentation).
A digital photo. This will be used for the photo roster if the application is successful.
Since the size of an email is limited to 10MB, we recommend using a file sharing service such as wetransfer.com.
